Somehow it was decided that there was going to be a girls "powderpuff" basketball league in the center. I got signed up by Kaitlyn and put on her team. In putting the teams together there could be one high school basketball player on each team.
Our team name: Home Kitty's
Members of the team:
Kaitlyn Hull
Leslie Gerber
Andi Jo Nelson
Whitney Landon
Whitney Ricks (aka Wendy)
Coach: Josh Ludlow
Our first game was on Sunday night against the "Hott Laurens." I was terrified. I don't like playing sports for a crowd. I don't like playing physical contact sports that much. I don't like the feeling I get when I am competitive. Mostly, I just wanted to win.
The game was close but we ended up winning by 1 point. Here were my low-lights of the game:
Fouls were called against me all the time. At one point I was elbowed in the face and yet the foul was on me. To be honest I am still pretty confused at this call. After our ref called it I may or may not have yelled (or more specifically said in a little louder tone than usual...but not a real yell) at him "She elbowed me in the face!" Yet the call remained.
30 seconds left in the game and we are up by 2. They get the ball and there is a break away. Luckily I am there. I completely stuff the girl and I got all ball. It was completely clean. Well they call a foul on me--which automatically gives them one point (don't get me started how I feel about that dumb rule). So then they were only down by one WITH the ball. So dumb.
Last low-light. My big toenail broke. The top hasn't fallen off and I have it bandaged so that it hopefully won't fall off. Doctor Chapman says that I will be okay but just to put a band aid on it so that it doesn't get ripped off. There was a bit of blood around it..and it may have hurt every left footed step I took the next day but all in all it will be just fine.
Oh one more comment. After the game I asked the ref what constitutes a foul. Do I know the answer to that question? Yes. But well I was frustrated because I had been called out way too much. I acted like I didn't know what was going on, but I did. Mom and Dad, do you remember when I was in Jr. Jazz and you had to bribe me with money to actually foul so that I would play hard? Apparently that isn't necessary anymore.
Luckily we won the game though. Did you know that I hate losing?
After the game I had a lot of people tell me they were impressed that I could play basketball. This brings up a question. Do I look like I am not athletic? Why were people so surprised? Who knows!

Oh my dear Whitney. You are funny. I will send you a longer email about not getting fouls. :) I'm sorry that you didn't have fun playing, but I sure thought it was fun to read about. I could see the way that every situation happened. Hilarious! (except for your big toe, that's sad.) (Kristina didn't delete a post -- it was me -- oops)
